What internet speed do you need for 4K IPTV?

Short answer: about 25 Mbps per 4K stream, on a line that does not drop. Here is the longer version.

5 MbpsSD stream
10 MbpsFull HD stream
25 Mbps4K stream

Add those numbers together for every screen that plays at the same time, then leave about a third on top for everything else in the house. Two 4K TVs and a phone in Full HD come to roughly 60 Mbps, so an 80 to 100 Mbps plan is comfortable.

Why stability beats speed

A 300 Mbps plan can still buffer if the Wi-Fi signal to the TV is weak. Live streams arrive in small pieces every few seconds; one slow piece and the picture stops. That is why the fix is usually the connection inside the home, not a bigger plan.

Five fixes that work

  1. Plug the TV or box in with a network cable, or use a Fire TV Ethernet adapter.
  2. On Wi-Fi, connect to the 5 GHz network and keep the router in the same room if you can.
  3. Restart the router and the stick once a week.
  4. In the player, raise the buffer to 5 to 10 seconds and use the hardware decoder.
  5. If your provider slows video traffic in the evening, a VPN can help; test with and without it.

How to test your line

Run a speed test on the TV itself, not on your phone next to the router. Most players and the Fire TV network menu have one built in. If the result on the TV is under 25 Mbps, watch the Full HD version of the channel until the connection is improved.
